“In the Woods” by Tana French
So annoyed… I found out about this book from someone in my dashboard posting who they thought should be cast if it got turned into a movie/TV show… Only now I can’t find that post & I can’t remember who it was that posted it. Argh!
As to who I think should be cast, I haven’t yet found my preferred Det. Rob Ryan/Adam Ryan, but for Cassie Maddox, I’m thinking Katie McGrath from Merlin (as she is Irish & would look great in dark curls while still being able to come across as a tough detective), & for Sam O’Neill, I kept on picturing David Oakes from The Borgias/Pillars of the Earth. I know that he’s been playing assholes-bordering-on-psychopathic characters, but he’s got a nice earnest face & it’d be great for him to use it once, playing a nice boyscout. These two are also the same age to each other & to the characters, so I think that would be a nice fit.

As for the ending… [SPOILER]
Well, if Tana French isn’t going to tell me what happened to Peter & Jamie, I’m just going to assume that Adam killed them. Something about being the outsider in that triangle, about being the chubby one, not quite fitting in that way… For most of the book, it actually seemed like Peter & Adam were the solid ones, with Jamie the girl being more on the outside, but with all of them on the verge of adolescence, it was hinted that Jamie might come in between the boys. Maybe it was an accident. The fact that Adam blanked out actually suggests to me that he might be the perp. I can’t figure out how he’d get those scratches on his back though (then again, this detail was mentioned very sparingly, so maybe even French doesn’t know?).
I can’t lie. I find it frustrating that French didn’t resolve the 1984 mystery. There were hints of a supernatural creature, but I just don’t want to venture down that resolution when the rest of the books was quite police procedural/psychological thriller.
